Commission a portrait: what to expect. Great artists portrait and photos of their models

Sure, some of contemporary artists paint exact copy of a reference photo. And if that’s what you need – please make sure to say that to the artist. Or simply have a good quality photo printed at printing store. It could be done on paper or canvas.

Below are some examples of portraits by great artists and photos of their models who inspired them for that painting. If you compare (on portraits versus photos) shapes of the lips, faces, eyes, etc. – you will notice differences. And if it bothers you – perhaps portrait commissions are not for you.

Do you see more life in the few portraits by different artists below when you compare to the photographs of that person (next to portrait)? I absolutely do. Other words, if you are an art lover or collector, you would enjoy commission a portrait which is artistic vision of that person by artist. Not an exact copy but energy, emotions and beauty which artist will see in the photo and capture it in painting.

Painting a portrait is not an easy 1-2-3 steps as sometimes you see it in TV shows. It takes great skills, a lot of work and full heart of an artist to do it for you.
